Busy Busy Busy.

Firstly, soon after the election, my partner and myself went our separate ways. So while going through the campaign, I was finding somewhere to live and dealing with that.

The Council have been excellent with their training for New, and Old Councillors. We had our photo taken for our ID and web page, I had peddled on my bike to get their on time, it was extremely hot for May, t shirt weather. No sooner had I got off my bike I had to don a shirt and tie and my suit jacket. The sweat was pouring from me and my head felt like it was going to explode...

We went to various meetings, looking back it seems quite a swirled up time. I was elected again, this time to the Licensing Panel, this is one of the legal Committees, we protect the residents of South Ribble as far as Licensing can go, with Taxi drivers, cars and operators, public events and pubs, clubs and bars.

As it was all new to me, I attended, and still do, nearly all the other committees, Planning, Scrutiny, Governance, Cabinet and of course Full Council.
I have also had an input on the Local Development Plan, this is to secure development around the Borough so that we get they types of development where we need them, rather than a developer dictating to us and building in the wrong place. Along with this we get a cash advance from the developer to improve the infrastructure.

I have started now to get more involved with charities, I do this alongside my radio show, a yes, I was not to have my voice or name be heard on the show during the election period, so I enlisted aDell, a computer generated voice to introduce trax for me, I should bring her back to the show, she was great.

It takes a while to understand how the council works, or doesn't work. I think I have just started to get it, so to speak. There has been much to take in, many folk to see and reams of paperwork to read.

I have also taken part in some demonstrations against the way public sector folk seem to be used as pawns to make another group look good, I find it odd that 100 billion or more in tax is avoided so they then pick on the few billion savings they can make by making folks lives worse.

I took part in the TUC march in Manchester.

It does feel we all are having to bend over backwards........

On my first visit to the Penwortham Pumpkin Patch I planted a tree as a representative of the council, the Mayor of the Borough and the Mayor of the Town could not make the 10 am shoot as it was bonfire night.

I did actually plant the tree, not just sprinkle a wee bit of dirt from the spade.

I also took part in the strike N30, I contribute to a pension as a public sector worker and was not happy with the GOV changing the deal I and my employer had signed up to.
I made a wee video with some topical music and many of my images. I also went to support those workers from the Borough who were as upset. I got up at 6 am to stand at the gates to where I worked, then off to the Civic Centre then off to Preston.

I went to see my Dad again in October, he is doing as well as can be expected, we had quite a good time together and many laughs, we share a similar sense of humour, and we get along. He seems not to want to go out anymore, for someone who you could not keep in, it seems odd. The guy who bought the house in Burgh Road has completely stripped it to the bare stone, I had a look around, it was eery, there were still bits of the old house left, memories were concentrated on those small remnants, the hand rail that still had a bit of blood on it from when he cut himself the last week he was there, the head marks on the upstairs bedroom window where he must have looked out of 100 times, not knowing, the glass light fitting I stripped and cleaned, the workshop that never was and the many projects he had started.

2011 has been quite a mixed year, my hopes are that I can be as best a councillor for the folk who elected me as I can, that my Dad has a great year and that I do not forget my Mam and all those who have departed over the years, especially my dear friend, and best friend, James Bulter.

As 2011 comes to an end, it seems a good time to update here.

It has been an interesting and varied year, started as most do, slightly hung over.

I had got more involved with the Labour Party at a branch level and was still reeling from our bosses cutting my pay in 5 ways, at least. I had campaigned against it but as a council employee, you don't really get to have your say, you are muted by terms of contracts, basically you are not to tell folk your thoughts on how your part of the council is run. I was not to contact councillors directly either, though I know some are contacted, now. Odd really, I cannot make comments but can vote them (sack) out.

I ended being on the ballot paper for our local elections last May, delivering thousands of leaflets, getting help from the very kind David Hanson MP and enjoying the support of other group members.

And on it went.

I went to see my Dad in Shetland, I thought that if I did win this election, I may be initially busy.
I took the time off work and caught the train and the ferry. My Dad has Alzheimer's and is being well looked after at Viewforth House in Lerwick.
It still is upsetting to see him this way, although we did not always see eye to eye, he was still Dad. I also timed my visit to coincide with the anniversary of my Mams passing, which in a way, highlighted the problems my Dad was having at the time.

There are always mixed feelings when I step off the ferry in Lerwick. As I have said before, Shetland is full of happy memories of childhood, watching my Mam letting go so to speak and enjoying life away from Dad and able to have fun with her sisters and many good friends. We too were let of the leash, many a day spent up the hill or with Grandad looking at the ships in the harbour. Our next door neighbour was Rhoda Bulter, a bubbley woman, mother to my best friend and the font of knowledge, it sometimes felt she knew every rock in Shetland and who had sat on it. Going out on runs with her and the dear Dennis and my best friend were great, always ended in ice-cream from a knocked up kiosk in what seemed the middle of no where, with views to die for, and many did in the 20th Century.

The picture is of the ruined smoke house of the fish station on Bressay near the Aith Gun, the fire bricks, came from Preston, very close to where I am now living.

Dad was well, he had settled in and was safe, my heart goes out to those who are being introduced for the first time to dementia, as a sufferer or a future carer.
The picture of our life is well drawn and full of all the good and bad things we had to go through to get to where we are, some folks ink is strong and vibrant to the end others have the misfortune of choosing not so permanent ink, then to top it off, it fades more rapidly as time ebbs on, some folk choose invisible ink and will never be able to show their picture.

Back here now and a couple of weeks to the election.

Then it comes, May 5th 2011.

I got up, had a good breakfast and started to complete my campaign. I officially opened the campaign garage of refreshments and additional leaflets.

I spent most of the day riding around chatting to folk and encouraging them to go and vote. I think I rode over 30 odd miles, down every street with a party flag on my bike.

We all came to my house and had some tea and snacks and got ready for the evenings events.

Nerves started to kick in a bit, though the folk I was with helped, I was intrigued by what was going on. I had gone with an open mind as I was not sure what I was letting myself in for. What I found appalling was the way some of the other politicians treated the folk who were doing the count, arguing, leering over them and being down right rude. I am glad to say I saw none of our party do that.

The count for my area did not start til about 4am, it was interesting to watch, I could not really see my votes, just those of the opposition. I toddled off for a wee and another coffee. As I walked back, one of my colleagues brushed passed me and said "you done it". Eh? I did not quite take it in until my name was called to verify they spoilt papers, then up on stage, even though I knew I had won, I was still checking the totals being read out, the announcement, "I do by declare that Keith Martin is Duly Elected as councillor in the Kingsfold Ward" or there abouts. As I walked down the stair from the podium, a council officer greeted me, "congratulations Councillor Martin, can you sign your pledge?" there I was, a councillor, everything still whirring around me but slightly faded like a 1980s Top of the Pops video effect.

Elections

Well then, I did it, with the help of an army of supporters.

I am now a Borough Councillor.

After several weeks of campaigning, the last day had come. We were frantically posting more leaflets and I rode my bike along every road and street in my ward, flag flying and proudly wearing my rosette.

Manned a polling station and visited many more, I recon I did about 30 miles.

At 8 pm we called it a day, many folk came round and we had a post campaign/pre-election yarn with snacks and tea and coffee, some even got some Blooming Tea.

Put on my Ben Sherman 2 piece, pink pin striped shirt and silk tie and off we went to the Eagle & Child.

At 11pm we went to the civic centre. Wow, there were about 150 folk milling around, some counting and some wearing yellow, red or blue ties, just incase.

The atmosphere was quite nice and lucid, as the night drew on and tiredness crept in the tension soon showed.

Re-counts were happening all over, the running had been very tight, folk were winning with a handful of votes, some with just 2.

As the night became morning, folk had lost some sense of self, body odour was abound and some breaths could strip paint.

Here comes mine.

I could not hang around and watch, the more I looked at the counted ballot papers, the more I saw crosses against the oppositions names.

After about 20 minutes, I had just come back from having a wee, a fellow candidate came beaming out of the crowd. "You've done it". For a start, I was taken aback, was this for real, was there someone behind me.

We were called to the head of the table to verify the votes and examine the spoilt papers.

I had won, and so had my running mate.

A few minutes later, up onto the stage, grins being fought back, then it was read out. I did not realise it but I had the most votes in the ward, and to top it all I beat the opposition with a 20% margin.
After stepping down from the stage, a woman from the Council said "could you sign this Councillor" WOW, a big slap on the back and a multitude of handshakes.

At that time, my thoughts were with my Mam and Dad, and I wondered if they would have been proud of me, the one guy who I knew would be would have been my Great Uncle Tom Morris, bus driver, politician, mayor, entertainer, friend to the Queen Mum and the Beverly Sisters.
Sadly they are not with us in body or in mind, so I sit and wonder.

Now, 2 weeks later I sit here on a Sunday evening and can finally relax. What with inductions, training and the admin I have been busy. The training and meetings go on for another 2 weeks fully, then we get into an order, the first business session is on, this is where we find out if we are going to be elected onto various committees.

No rest now.

Thanx to all that were instrumental to making my day.

And let their god look after the souls of those not around to smile with me.

Election Victory

At last I can break my silence.

For the last month or so I have been unable to comment in many places due to me standing in Borough and Town elections.

At about 04.30 on 6th May I was elected as Borough Councilor for the ward I was standing in.

I missed winning on Town Council by 3 votes. But, one may be enough for now.

I have been unable to present my radio show but have been able to produce it, still playing some gud toons and using a computer generated voice called aDell. She got quite an attitude and I feel she will be back.

It has been a busy month, delivering thousands of leaflets, knocking on hundreds of doors and speaking to many folk.

Yesterday I visited every road in my ward on my bike with party flag, rosette and greetings to all. This seemed to have got me the most votes in the Ward.

I could not do all of this without the support of party workers, volunteers and activists and of course those who have put their trust in me.

Reflecting on it I feel quite privileged to have been given this task. I will do my upmost to represent all of my ward.

Wind Power, 1796

Over 200 years ago, here in Thornton wind was the main power. Now we seem to have gone full circle. We are told we need to harness the wind again. The trouble is that the new windmills, are quite large, dominate the skyline and are quite pointy. The debate goes on locally and nationally. I can understand the need for alternative power but I can see the need for a beautiful place to remain so.

I have been thinking of this for a while. As us human beans get on with just paying our power bills. There are others that have been given power and then use that to gamble with our well being. We have to pay for our power using, and now it seems our power giving as well. These forth commin elections could shift the balance of power, hopefully less gas and more of a spark. We have been led to think we now have the power yet we seem powerless as to the cuts that will bleed for many years. The Big Society?? As Ed Milliband said, what about the Fair Society?

Or will we? With the impending doom prescribed to us, how much can we do without oil. The oilmen get fat with the profits they make from this trade. In a way we all profit with the use of oil. Manufacturers of cars try to make their machines as fuel misers. Yet some folk still seem to want to race around at full throttle and it is costing them dearly. Many need fuel as a lifeline, for warmth and transport to work the land to feed us. Then why do the islands have to pay so much extra for something on their doorstep. Councilor Wills wants a micro_refinery built, that is very sensible. Sending oil to Scotland and back at inflated prices is madness. But if that happens, will the petrol dealers make even more profit? Again, time for some action. Write to Councilor Wills may be a good start.

What a cracking day. Since I have been here on my break the weather has been fantastic. Even if the weather was poor my visit would still be fantstic. The folk I have met certainly make the place bright all the time. Lynne and Jim from Fort Charlotte guesthouse have always offered great hosptality, Mike, Alex and the rest of the Coastguard team with their passion and love for where they serve, Inga and Mandy for their support of this home they call Shetland. Not forgetting as well, Amy. All these folk and many more think this is a great place, so it is with all the right ingredients.

Reasons to be cheerful

My walk from the new defences at the Sletts up to the Knab has been fantastic. Although the frost is still lurking in the shadows, the sun breaks the chill and encourages a wee bit of perspiration. With the sun lighting their faces like sweets bring out the child there is a vigor in the greetings of the morning. Folk are smiling, children are chattin and I came across a grandad and grandaughter singing Shetland songs. There are many reasons to be cheerful. Embrace them. Have fun.

Another good start.

Another great looking morning here on the Thule. I met with the representatives from the Shetland Coastguard yesterday. We did some recordings for future radio shows. Through out the session, the loss of jobs was last thing mentioned. Their total concern was the future safety of the Isles, the folk who use the seas not just around but for hundreds of miles. Also the Shetland Coastguard are involved in missing persons, mountain rescue, inland rescue and incident management. They provide the personal touch, educating kids and anyone who needs information. They deal with the kin if victims to help them understand and they know the area, its foybles and its folks. They do this with passion and vigor with complete confidence. So #saveshetlandcoastguard there is a meeting at the Town Hall on 28 Feb, sign the petition and put up a poster.

A good start at 60 Deg North

It always nice to meet a smiling face. I went into the pub last night to be greeted with smiles from folk who know me. Then for a second, knowing them I thought too that I may still have some of my tea still on my face. And it was as if I had never been away. The stories, tales and banter continued from 6 months before. Shetland has hever changing feelings in my heart, the land holds some of my kin and my best friend, its buildings hold my Dad who suffers with Alzheimer's. Another building shelters my Uncle who has been confined to a life of limited mobility, but he will improve. I have met some new folk already, happy sorta people with a nice attitude and a sense of caring. I still feel proud and very happy to be related to all these people. And very priviliged to have met, known and getting to know them.

The setting sun

Every moment, the sun sets. It could be a great day, a hard year, a fruitful life or a good job.
The most some folk hope for is another day, to prove that stuff can get better. They may just want to experience some happiness. Many folk in the world thank the setting sun, another gruelling unforgivving and hungry day is over, one less to contend with. The setting sun comes with beauty and power. When the heat dies and the rays turn to a glow it gets cold. Scorching deserts become frozen. Everyone should be afforded the same tomorrow,one of warmth, full bellies, happy kids, contented auld folk. I cannot wait to se YOU tomorrow, my friend.

We had redundancy in our house a couple of weeks back. It said it may pay us a visit in a letter that started with 'Dear'. Who will it be was the initial question, though I thik deep down we knew. Work then becomes a most horrible place. Folk seem to go against being nice and helpful, working together. Some turn it into a vindictive quest, others work hard to minimise the harm. You are now redundant! Don't do much for your own sense of pride and self worth. No need for you to be there anymore, thanks. Now that it has left our house, we still find the odd dirty cup, cigarette butt and sock it left behind. If this cruel thing visits or announces a visit, go get some protection, advice and try to get your work mates to work together. We will all suffer its venom.

Time runs out for some.

Well it seems that the next few weeks may or break this counties moral. Even now, in this new partnership none of us asked for the leaders have different views. The trouble with the right wing is they don't seem to care about folks feelings during hardship. The do tend to be reasonbly well off. The millionares who are running our country are quite immune to what their actions will do. After watching how they also manipulate meetings to suit their goals. We have had redundancy in our home recently, the process, the worry and the sleepless nights took their toll and that puts a strain on many things. All I can do is ask you to think of eachother. Support is paramount. And hopefully you will go to your last resting place happy and in love.

All round vision.

I still remember these vehicles on our roads. I liked the curved windows. Our house in west london had curved windows, you got all round vision. Something that seems to be lacking in folk who think they know best for us. Pickles is in the Sun today with his comments about pay and blaming some councils for the problems. The fact is that no two councils are the same, so you cannot compare really, it would be unfair. The sad thing is the suffering this wil cause, stress, loss of income, unable to plan for the future and putting social housing schemes into jepardy. Meanwhile the rats still lurk around the house of power, with their millionair ways.

Alot at stake

What happens over the next few months will play a major part in how our society is shaped and how folk will be looked after.
We are suffering at the hands of some who show no feelingfor the harm they will do to people. Instead of making people worried, frightened for their future and making them feel voiceless we need to stand up and make our feelings be known. Some will say "what's the fuss about, I am OK!" These cuts will only show their teeth over the next two months, as more redundancies will be revealed, cuts to grants that keep folk off the street and an increase in crime as police numbers are cut and PCSOs are sacked. In Kingsfold the PCSOs have played an important part in making it a better place to live, sadly, after all the hard work and learning to trust it may go back to the way it was. On 5th May, make your voice known.

We are workin hard to maintain stuff other folk rely on for their safety and well being. We seem lucky in our jobs, others are not so. It seems that the budgets required to look after folk seem to be getting hit. And society will be moving back to a time of having to look after their own. It also seems that we are being led down a path of segregation. Very few folk know the whole thing when they are on their own bringing up or looking after someone who needs some help. Some of these folks will have to prove that what they do is justified. Homeless will also suffer as grants are cut to charities that offer hope, many of our homeless are ex-forces, abandoned by the country and left to work out how to survive, it is why so many are in prison. Councils do so many complecated and involved things for folk, folk who have independant needs, something you cannot justify making a profit on. It seems to be getting worse, this is why I am standing in the comming local elections. I may only have a small voice, but it is backed up with a big heart.

Where is the British spirit? We would always fight for what we thought was right, we would not be just walked over. Daycare centers, swimming pools, libraries are all closing. What gets up my nose is my MP, Lorraine Fulbrook seems have to have moved south, not fighting for her electorate. Financed by hedge fund owners and livin it up.

As we get older. We all deserve some support

As our days here tick away like a wind up clock, the mainspring getting weaker and each tick becomes more tiring it is nice to know that at the moment, when the spring does weeken there will be folk there to help the hand along the way. Sadly, we are being forced to hope that this help will be around in the future. The way the UK GOV is speeding through these cuts they SAY we need, we are not planning properly for the future. We think for a moment that things have settled and we can make plans, then another cut, like pulling the sticks from a game of Kerplunk. The marbles will trickle down as their support is removed until there are not enough sticks to sustain the marbles and they come crashing down. Us marbles need to stop our support being withdrawn. Too many will not be able to stop themselves hitting the bottom, some need extra sticks. Let us now work together to hold onto our sticks, and eachother, we are all gorgeous and ain't it gorgeous to meet and help gorgeous people. Take care or each other, be nice human beans.

Sittin here having my dinner in Back Lane. There are many Back Lanes in Lancashire. The layered hedge infront of me has been bared by winter but idoes reveal. The lawn and feeding birds behind it. The hedgerow looks to be very old and has not been trimmed for a while. It is resonably warm considering the recent 0.01 of a meter snow fall we had the other day. Where is it all going?

As I sit here at work watching the snow white washin the land on which I live, I wonder why folks seem to be a little less caring nowadays. Because I work for a local authority, it seems I may have to pay for the mistakes made by those who are now awarding themselves huge bonuses and wage rises. It seems that we need to slash budgets so much it seems outragous and a disrespect for folks labours. We are going to cut up and scrap Nimrods that are about to go into service. The job losses, compensation for breached contracts and the moral well being of the community are a huge cost to take, then the skilled folk will leave, ideas and innovations will stagnate and this part of British industry will die back to service the ideals of folk who were not directly elected into power.

400 litres of Ice

Well, the last evening of sub zero temperature killed off my water butts. I came home to find them both split along the bottom and up the sides. I now think that I should have emptied them. Good new though, now it is thawing I can see my carp survived in the pond. I left the pump and filter going and he seemed to have survived by staying in the movement of water between them. I do hope you all had a great time over the last few days. Here here to a great New Year.

Gone but never forgotton. This club in Ormskirk on the A59 is slowly tumbling into the ground. The memorial at the front is adorned with poppies, the building with the sprayed scrawl of the youth that benefited. I am sure many pounds were raised, many a comforting arm and some sad memories have been within these walls.

With the coming holiday I wonder how many folk will spend a couple of weeks watching this. It is the only time I think that many families will sit around the table for a meal. The seasons greatings will not be enjoyed by all. As with the world cup, this time brings the increase in violence against women and children. This sorta stuff needs to stop. There are many reasons for it and there is no simple answer. If, at this time, or any, you see these actions or the result of, could you sit back and not do anything. The sad thing is about it is if it were a cat or a dog being kicked to death we would report it.
Think of the kids and their mams. There are occasions that the male of the relationship is the one being abused. As I said, no simple answer.

The view from here can be outstanding. Many a time I have sat up here, scanning the view and getting ready for what you can see comming. A good place to be perhaps. The other side of the road you cannot see so well due to a few houses and a pub, I have been caught out from that side, behind things that appear so familiar, they hid the pending bad weather. I sorta think that being at the top requires allround vision, perhaps looking behind some stuff to find out more. From there you can help other folk see, who, for whatever reason are unable. An advantage should be shared a little, someone could have given you that helping hand to get you to the top.

Folk are already complaining, making their excuses. For however long, take a little time to paint your face with sunlight and warm the you inside. First job of the day. Outside Edge Hill University, Ormskirk, Lancashire. A bright crispy day. Installing CCTV. They have a cashpoint machine that still gives five pound notes, the last time I saw that was in 1988. Poor students. The university overlooks Ormskirk ans Aughton, you can see the steeple of Christ Church, Long Lane/A59. All the treetops are coated with frozen dew, the crystals trying their upmost to get away from the twigs and bud but rely totally on them for support. Tha sun is slowly withering them, but they will be back again.

Ah yes, it has been a while since I have been home, me Dads house is now sold and he has now settled at Viewforth. Sorta worried now about all these cuts we are having from the ConDemNation (RightWingRevengers).
Even though my Dad pays for his own care he could pay more or get less of a service, we will wait and see. My Auntie Caroline and friends made a fortune with the Charity shop for Juvenile Diabetes, she's a good egg.
We have taken out redundancy insurance, as both of us serve the public. We did the sums and for 2 years it would be worth it.
We are having a fantastic autumn, well colourwise.
It seems that the winter has upset folk as they seem to be driving like bigger idiots than before, too many still using phones etc.
The radio project is going well, we enjoy it. We have obtained a mini studio so we are looking at our own productions, I may even get to go onto SIBC....

It is sad nowadays that folk have to work every day. The stress it must cause must become unmeasurable. Then folk will not spend good time with folk, exploring human kind and how a little down time, stock taking can be quite hypnotic and leads to a better understanding. Had a meal with family yesterday, it was very nice. A little banter. We seem to surround all facettes of our lives with the tensions of expectations. Book yourself some thinking time, eat well and smile at folk, they will generally smile back, and so you have started something :-)}

Rainy Days

I remember this sorta view from when I was small. The summer holidays had just started, just in time for the rain. Our Mam had got us books, crayons, drinks and snacks for the train journey a head o us. We would get to the station in London, everything was shiney, crystal like in the wet, looking at the gutter, noticing the patterns of wee oil slicks and the black whisps of diesel exhaust particals. Waitin in the station, always finding the spot where the roof leaked. Then onto the train. We had to befriend the train for it was to be our conveyor to Aberdeen and a short visit to Balmedie. The train, 13 hours of it was ok till it got dark and nothing could be seen except the small galaxies called towns, and the swirling traffic, lights reflected even more so because of the crystal. If you opened the window on the door and put your hand out you would cringe at the coldness the rain peppering your skin at many miles an hour. Dawn would break to the right and folk would get up to wet the tracks. Soon we would be travelling along the east coast of Scotland, over the bridge to Dundee I remember me Dad pointing out the foundations of the 1st bridge that collapsed killing quite a few folk. It was the time of the rig building frenzy and you could not look towards Europe without seeing one being dragged to the spot of future wealth. Aberdeen always felt cold. And wet too. On the bus to visit folk. Arriving in Balmedie, all of us knackered. Getting scalded by Mam for my dirty neck then finding out it was the dye from the new shirt she had got me to travel in. Then to the Clair, down to the depths of this hulk, next door would be the sheep. We would say hello to Kenny, have a snack and hit the bunks. Through the night, the constant penetrating drone of the engine and bearings, sheep worried, bags and clatters and the water wooshing past the door under the false decking and crashing upon the bulkhead. 6Am and we would be up, the holidays close, my best friend James Bulter, granparents and kin,long days and rain, holiday rain.

For years, outside our house near London a tree grew, many a car bumper, light cluster and cyclist had came across it.
It stood proud, during hosepipe bans and feet of snow.
I used to lock my bike to it.

It was not for a while did I discover how this tree has survived more than I have ever seen thrown at it. From Ice ages to Hydrogen bombs.

The trees ancestors date back about 200 million years.

It is the single remaining tree species of the hundreds that once existed and is know as the LIVING FOSSIL

The tree is biologically simple in construction, simple branching veins.

At the end of the War with Japan in the 1940s The United States detonated a hydrogen bomb
over Hiroshima , The Ginkgo Trees in the area survived and still grow today, will those that were not fully exposed. Here is a web site about these trees. Many have temples near them, some continually have temples rebuilt around them.

The Ginkgo tree was introduced into Britain from Japan in the 18th Century. The tree at Kew dates to this time and is included in the Tree Council’s “50 great British Trees”. The world’s oldest and largest specimen -over 1,000 years old and 60 m in height - is at Yon Mun Temple, South Korea. The tree, often planted near temples, is sacred to Buddhists. “Ginkgo” means “silver nut/apricot” and derives from the old Japanese name. “biloba” refers to the two-lobed leaf.

I have ordered some seeds, I will send a couple to Kev, keep some myself.

I was told that keeping a female tree was frowned upon, now I know why, they smell of rancid butter. Sadly this has pushed the tree into the endangered species. Because of the popularity of the male trees they are struggling in the wild. May a chance to help by planting seeds, though I think away from houses.

Hello folks,

The last few weeks have sorta knocked it out of me. The realisation of massive changes and the fact that nothing can be done to stop them.
This month saw me finally clearing the last shackles from my parents house and take the last load to the tip. Watching the house drip our past into such places is a bit of a rum doo. I would go and tell my Dad all, it is easy to now as he has succumb to Alzheimer and is not really caring. But we do hit a wee spark every now and then, and funnily that seems acceptable.
I found a newspaper cutting from 1991 reporting on my Dad getting his degree in Maths. I remember it well. I packed up some of the things my Dad had started but never finished, all these new projects to prove that he was not loosing it. He would continually joke, but I remember the fear in his eyes when we spoke about his illness, the sad look in his eyes as he scans the photographs in the house. In a way he is now not living with his mistakes and they now sit unresolved. It could be a blessing, I don't know. He has no apparent fear now but since he is now kept in Viewforth his skin has started to ashen and build more character. After many years of looking after his fitness, running to the dump and back to pass the time the 58 year old looking funny Englishman is rapidly sprinting to look 70.
He had a hard upbringing, we made it hard for him too, my Mam was not well so he had to look efter her and when she passed in 1997 it seemed to be a trigger for him to let go a bit. He tried to get the house in order.
In the near future when the house down Burgh Road is sold I will complete the Shetlopedia page on it. It only seems fair to wait for now.
Looking back now I feel many things, but the one thing I feel the most is some regret. I will not list it cos it is generally yhe same for most folk.
My Dad has sorta passed on, we are now just saving his dignity, and hoping for a modicom of my Dad to come back for a wee while, probably to satisfy our own fears.

Look after yourselves and others..

Muckle Flugga and Saxa Vord

Some say that this establishment, Saxa Vord, was a prime target for a Soviet Bomb.
At one time there was no way up here without attention.

It has rows of tube lights that face outward of the fence, the reason for this is shown above, the gunner gets a good view.

The tunnel does not go to the top, there are comments that there are underground bunkers here, the tunnel would disguise the numbers of folks using it perhaps.

But the drain could be a way in. (Famous Five thinking) All that security and they forget the drain, I think not.

Just beyond the fence and the lights you can see Muckle Flugga

And look the other way you can see the shore station for the Muckle Flugga Lighthouse

It is the most Northern point of the UK.
Well worth the visit.

A Bit of the Manchester Ship Canal at Cadishead

I worked on the Cadishead by-pass or A57 a few years ago. They had just finished the road and we were there to provide Traffic Management for the planting of shrubs etc.
The above vessel was the 1st I saw on the canal. It had come loose and drifted from an area of jetty which was being maintained.

Then this beast came along

And then another

But this little duckling survived em, the workmen came along to bring her home after we managed to contact the oil jetty controller

This was a rail bridge over the canal, you can see how huge the centre arch is to accomodate ships of old

This Grey vessel showed at the oil terminal

The rail bridge serviced the soap factory which had its own rail locomotive. It had no boiler and was charged with steam from the factory boilers.

Grass, baby arachnids and back to earth

These wee fellas were the first baby spiders I had seen this year. When there is no wind they ball together, but as soon as a breeze hit them they would abseil and hope to be carried off. I have heard that spiders have been found at over 20,000 feet high, there is also a rumour that we all come from spiders from outerspace. Dead dudes landed on our bare planet and the bacteria they contained started us lot and all you can see.. The Auld fella hase a Honey, we have a Suzi, here you get to meet the tin box.

The first Radish this year. How exciting, I guess you are all saving this image for you desk top.
This is a French variety, somewhat bland and tasteless. These varieties of radish have been messed about cos we dont like the hot variety I remember in times gone by, they also used to grow in about 2-3 weeks, these things took 4-5. The search is on for the hot salad radish.

There is much debate about these Montgolfier flying devices. I think luckily they are so expensive in this country that hundreds are not let go at once. These ones came down in our strees, not a bad shot for two to get here, our street is only 1/10th of a mile long if stretched and only 15 feet wide.
These will fly as long as the fuel cell keeps burning, the wee black thing you can see ar the circular opening. They are carried with the wind for up to 2 minutes.
These modern day Doodlebugs are the bain of farmers and coastguards. Because of their wire construction they do not rot, the ballon bit does, there have been reported complains of these being entangles on cloven hooves and bovine snouts, sheep have had then entwined in their pelts causing sores and the like. When these sorts of things forst flew many generations ago in the east they were made from bamboo. Although bamboo was used in the torcher of WWII prisoners of war they were pretty harmless to animals. They come in different colours and can and have been mistaken for a distress flare by sea going folk. Although practice is good, measured practice can be budgeted for. And folk don't risk their lives chasing hot air.

What will come first, the damson or the bulldozer. Well with the current situation I think I will get the sweet treat of damsen for breakfast and pre tea as I travel too and from work if the kids and wasps dont beat me. The cold winter seems to have put paid to wasps as there have only been a couple of sightings. We had a wasps nest in our attic. A wonderful creation of nature made up from our fence chewed up and spat out. Sadly it could not stay for too long. I waited for as long as I could before I dealt with it. The little critters were in the house and with the Lesser Spotted Lizzies' medical thingies were hade to get rid of them.

The picture above is The River Ribble and I was standing on the old footbridge when taking this photo.
The Ribble is an important river and has helped to make Preston with its growth throughout the years.
We were off to the Preston Mela, a celebration of Asian culture here in the North West and a fantastic festival. Excellent food and excellent folk.

We turned to continue over the bridge and was confronted with the image below.

Judging by the looks of things this person has stayed here a while. We wondered where they may have been now and what they were doing, did they have a full belly or has life dealt them such cards as to lie somewhere fueling an internal struggle with alcohol or drugs.
Lizzie always tries to give something to these folk she sees, I sometimes think it may not be the right thing to do, but I know until there is a viable alternative, we may be forced to. With the government wielding a huge axe cutting budgets and changing folks lives, as if we were being punished for not voting for them in the past I really do fear for these folk myself.
Many I have met have had problems, unable to get on at school, a chalenging childhood, a breakdown or rejection. Many have some sort of difficulty within, some cannot read or write, some have mental illnesses and some lost all hope.
If we are able to help these folk through these times then help we should. I myself had been in such a place for a short while. It takes a long time to climb back. I was lucky and had been given a break and was able too to see what it meant. I was also lucky to have met Lizzie. Very lucky.

The above picture sorta sums Southport up. A seaside refuge for folk from Liverpool North. A mix of old and new. This post was inspired by Kev who, when I was here was traveling back from seeing Tessa Cohen on the Mainland in Shetland. Below are some new apartments and a hotel. Art Deco in design and pleasing to look at. Sadly, the retail part had been MT for some time since its completion,
The theatre is squeeze next to it, it has been around and faces the lake built by the Victorians when Southport was a pioneer in the seaside trade. Many good things have happened there.
This is the new bridge built during the second Elizabethan Times. Alot of money has been spent in Southport, and it did need it, and still needs it..behind it is the pier....
After stepping on to the pier, this is a look back to its entrance. A tram runs the pier in busy times and part of it can be closed to the public at night.
A paddle steamer. My partners Dad worked on it and transported it on the back of a lorry, she remembers sitting in it as they travelled, no health and safety there then, but she survived. You can hire a wee motor boat and go around in circles.
Ah, the said motor boats and a rare image of the Lesser Spotted Lizzie.
If you are young, have a rubber head and can heal quickly, this may be the place for you. Though full of yunguns, lots of grumpy types seem to hang around to watch and comment on any carnage, with claims of "I knew that would happen"
For those of a more energetic dispossition there is the wee golf course. In the distance the dreaded shopping experience.
This yellow snake replaces the tram everynowandthen. Kids loveit, as do dome older kids..
Southport is well trained me thinx. This is a bit of a delpadated station with a mini diesel engine enthusiast taking more folks for a ride...

Now, don't this look nice. Lizzie commented saying that it looks very much American. I did not think it was that bad as all the cars had their steering wheels on the right. We travel on the left because of days when we carried swords and rode horses. Travelling on the left allows you to draw and use your sword.

Seasonal foodstuffs

Well then, summers bounty has begun, some we still have to wait for. I have had a few things from my pots. Pots because the prune that concreted the back garden poisoned the remaining borders with what ever is under it, the joys of a rented house

The above will be our first strawberry, this I am excited about, have you seen how much they are in the shop and how far they travel. Folk want these seasonal fruits all seasons, which now makes them the same price all year around.

We decided to grow stuff we use that costs the most.

Above is Rocket, a peppery leaf salad. This comes in bags, what you see there is about 1.20 pounds from the shop, for me, a quarter of a packet of seeds for a pound, some reusable soil and tray. I did get a mini greenhouse on wheels for this, but now have the lettus bug and now looking at another one for the leaf stuff. There is nothing nicer I have now found....

At the bottom of the picture above is the Sweet Laurel, or Bay Tree. Behind it is a wee bit of Norway (more to come) to the left is a recued Japanese Mapel which was rescued from the recycle bin at a neighbours. Ten bay leaves costs about a pound in the shops, we have had this plant now for 6 years and used about 10 leaves per week as well as the gifts.

This is the start of my potato plant, I say the start, those few leaves have been trying for the sun but someone keeps covering then up again to promote more growth and more tatties, his brother/sister is too so mistreated. I am so too looking forward to fresh new pots...are you?

The lovely lady above is Rosemary. Most excelent with lamb and in gravy, but for those who are not into meats is will add a dash of flavour to most potato preperations and some salads, there are some cheeses too, mainly the mouldy, cultured type, you can use the flowers as well. I have a meat needle, a sorta crocodile clip on a skewer, you attach the strand of rosemary to it and can thread it through what ever you want, it was originally design for threading suet through beef joints, a most fantastic thing from the olden days.

Chives are a good thing too, and you can also eat the flowers. A mild onion flavour. You can grow the odd bit of garlic clove and use the tips in a similar way, great in salads and on some hot buttered new potatos.

I like radishes too, as a test, with my free French Breakfast Raddish seed packet I thought I would try some in these small pots. Oh, what ever happened to those hot spicy raddishes I used to get when I was little. The whole raddish family used to be fun but these guys are a wee bit lame. Oh, the rest of my Norway contingant are behind them, as you can see one is not too well, but seems to be comming round, he is called Ian.

!!!Warning, not suitable for those folk who like small fury things!!!

I did not grow the above two myself, they just do that, they have also driven off the Red dudes who are smaller and so much cuter, but these guys have now found a purpose. Spatchcocked (look it up) on a BBQ. There is a growing trend to eat these little fellas, there is open season on them as they are not native and not protected and taste so much better than the wirey rabbits around here. Rest assured, I will not be eating these two as they have young. And I dont think the local kids would like the idea of me using a Black Widow Catapult to encourage them onto the hot coals...

More food to come, Cugerettes, or baby marrows, various thyme and nasturniums (WHAT I HEAR YOU SAY!), these are very peppery, the leaves are fine, the flowers are excelent for decoration and edible but the seed pods are to die for. Real pepper hot......Enjoy

The ban on air travel over the UK showed me, and probably others how the skies should look like. Not before the Wright brothers have we had a plane free sky.

But to get this, alot of folk have had their travel plans disrupted, airlines had reported serious losses and alot of bad energy was abound I bet. We also had to endure bits of Iceland falling on us...
Then on the radio came the news, suddenly the manufacturers said yup, we have adjusted the tolerences and our engines can be used (no pressure I bet). Then we hear in the news that fighter jets had to be grounded soon after. But their engines are different and they tend only to have one. I bet too that there is some frantic post flight inspections going on. I hope that nothing bad comes of this..

And slowly the skies filled

Community Radio

I have signed up for a course on radio production with our local community radio station. A 3 day course on the productions required, presenting and content. We also learn interview stuff, editing and the more technical side. We then have to produce and present 3 shows for air and we can then, if ready get a more regular shows. Gonna have to think up an angle on this....

My Dads Birthday

Tomorrow, my Dad will turn 70. Sadly he will know nothing of this, his memories have been atacked by Alzheimer's

I visit him as often as I can, he had little recolection of me 2 years ago, but the last visit the whole world seemed a challenge for him.

It is upsetting to watch a person go through this, and for me the knowledge that what my Dad does now would sicken him if his mind were to return.

He currently lives in his own house and has support, but to be fair to his dignity, he needs full time professional care.

My sister and myself do what we can do, we are not trained in these matters, and I think we have our own worries and fears towards this.

So to my Dads memory, I raise a glass. Happy birthday Dad, where ever you are...
